Part of the SCA Coffee Skills Program, Introduction to Coffee is open to coffee enthusiasts and specialty coffee professionals alike. Intro to Coffee is a comprehensive crash course in the specialty coffee industry. It charts coffee's journey from its origins in Ethiopia to the major commodity that it is today. This course gives a general overview of the specialty coffee supply chain and explores topics such as history and cultivation, variables that affect coffee quality, basics of sensory analysis, fundamentals of roasting, factors of coffee freshness, and principles of brewing. Learners will also discuss the importance of water quality, equipment cleanliness, and maintenance. In the Opo Coffee training lab, this interactive course also includes a live coffee roasting demo, coffee cupping, and hands-on manual pourover brewing instruction. You’ll get direct instruction and practice using commercial or home espresso equipment to get one step better in pouring latte art - whether that's starting with a simple heart, or improving technique for more consistent milk texture for your more advanced pours. No previous experience required. Our 2nd annual Cup Tasters will be held on Saturday, March 15. This was such a fun time last year that we are bringing it back with a new pairing in each round. If you're not familiar with a cup tasters competition, this video gives a good look at the professionals. In our version, each round will consist of 3 beverage pairings with 3 cups each, where 1 cup is different from the other 2. We will have coffee in each round, along with other beverages such as soda, juice, water, etc. A point is given for each correct pick and competitors will be timed in the case of a tie. The highest score in each round will move on to the next heat.
